3 Tips To Help Prevent Scratches On Your Metal Roof

Posted on

There are a lot of things to love about a metal roof. You might love the look of your roof, the way that it can help save energy and the durability that it offers, but there is one thing that you might be worried about -- scratching.

Scratches on a metal roof can make it look less appealing and can put it at risk of added damage, so it's important to avoid scratching the top of your home. It's true that metal roofs can be more susceptible to scratches than other types of roofs, but this doesn't mean that you can't avoid them. If you want to keep your roof looking great and scratch-free, follow these three tips.

1. Be Careful When Walking on Your Roof

You may climb on top of your roof to inspect it for damage and perform maintenance. When walking on top of your roof, however, you have to be careful to ensure that you don't damage it. Try to walk directly over the joists, where there is as much stability as possible, and try to avoid excessive walking whenever possible. Also, make sure that your shoes are clean and that there is no debris beneath your feet when you are walking.

2. Avoid Damage When Cleaning It

You probably know that it's a good idea to get rid of leaves and other debris that might settle on top of your roof, but you have to do so carefully. When purchasing a roof cleaning brush, make sure that the bristles are as soft as possible. Stiff-bristled brushes can cause serious scratches when you attempt to clean your roof. For even more added protection, you can use a roof cleaning tool that features microfiber cloth instead of having bristles at all; these can work quite well at getting rid of debris but don't cause added damage.

3. Keep Your Trees Well-Trimmed

Make sure that your tree limbs are very well-trimmed. If tree limbs fall off of a tree onto the top of your roof or brush the top of your home, they can cause scratches, dents and other damage. Luckily, keeping them trimmed should help prevent this damage.

If you follow these three tips, you shouldn't have to worry about scratching. Then, you can keep your roof looking great and can avoid adding scratches that can put your roof at an added risk of rust or other corrosion.
