Got Gnats? Possible Reasons You Have Them And How To Get Rid Of Them

Posted on

Gnats can be annoying, and it can be difficult to get rid of them at times. If you have gnats in your home, there are many possible reasons why. Even though gnats are very tiny, they can quickly become a nuisance. Below are what causes gnats and how you can get rid of them

Causes of Gnats

One main cause of gnats is in the trash can. They are drawn to any kind of vegetation or food that you put in there. To take care of this problem purchase a trash can that has a tight seal and take your trash out immediately when it becomes full.

If you have houseplants, you may be surprised that they can cause gnats. Gnats are drawn to moisture as well as poor soil. Every time you water your plants you may notice gnats not soon after. If you have poor soil, it will take longer for the soil to soak up the moisture. To take care of this problem only water your plants when they are completely dry and only use organic soil, which can be purchased at garden centers.

Leaving dirty dishes in your sink can also result in gnats. They love the food on the dishes, along with the moisture.

Get Rid of Gnats

There are things you can try at home to get rid of these pests. There are pesticides on the market specifically made to get rid of gnats. You can also purchase a gnat trap. This trap has a scent that draws gnats to it and once they enter the trap they are trapped. If you have houseplants that are causing the gnats, place one of these traps close to your plants.

If you want to use a homemade product to get rid of gnats, you should try vinegar.  Gather together some apple cider vinegar, dish soap, sugar and water. Mix four tablespoons of vinegar with two tablespoons of sugar. Add a few drops of liquid dish soap and four cups of water. Place this mixture in a container and place the container in the area where you see the gnats. The gnats are attracted to the vinegar smell. When they fly into the vinegar and soap mixture they will die when they touch the liquid.
